Here are some of the most frequent CV blunders that I see:

• Including unnecessary information such as gender, religion, date of birth, marital status, age, etc. These details are irrelevant for most jobs and can lead to discrimination or bias. Focus on your skills, qualifications, and achievements instead.👌

• Not being detailed in the work experience section. Many people just list their job titles and responsibilities without showing how they contributed to the organization or what results they achieved. Use numbers, percentages, and specific examples to demonstrate your impact and value.💯

• Not being prepared for virtual interviews. Due to the pandemic, many employers are conducting interviews online via The Google Meet, Zoom, Skype, or other platforms. This means you need to have a good internet connection, a quiet and professional background, and a suitable outfit. Also, practice your answers beforehand and be confident and enthusiastic.😊

If you are looking for a job in Nigeria, you might be in for a rude shock.

The gap between what universities and colleges prepare you for is often different from the labor market. For example, one area I’ve noticed is in sales and marketing, our education system is not niched enough. We are still being taught broad courses like business administration as opposed to specialized areas in sales, digital marketing or emerging courses like AI application in marketing and finance.

We end up with graduates who have to relearn these specialized areas through relying on online courses after school. This is why we care and why we are dedicated to holding this webinar.

But that’s not all. There is also a huge geographical divide in the job market. According to a World Bank report, northern Nigeria has low levels of education access and high youth underemployment, while southern Nigeria has more jobs and income opportunities.

This means that depending on where you live, you might have more or less chances of finding a good job. And don’t get me started on the gender gap. A recent study found that women in Nigeria face several discriminations that limit their full capacity, such as lower wages, lower education levels, and lower participation in decision-making.

The advancement in technology is also creating new challenges and opportunities for job seekers in Nigeria. On one hand, technology can increase productivity and innovation, but on the other hand, it can also create skills mismatch and displacement of workers.

A study by CSEA found that there is a mismatch between the job skills acquired by employees from academic institutions and the actual skills set needed to execute tasks in the labor market. This means that many workers are either overqualified or underqualified for their jobs.

So what can we do about this?

How can we bridge the gap between education and employment in Nigeria? How can we ensure that everyone has equal access to quality jobs and income? How can we prepare ourselves for the future of work?
